»Dieser performative Ansatz eignet sich besonders für das Themen- und Aktionsfeld Stadt, weil Städte hochgradig komplexe und dynamische Gebilde sind, die sich zu unzulänglich in statischen, rationalisierbaren Kategorien durch Pläne, Karten, Diagramme und Statistiken erfassen lassen. In der Stadtsoziologie wird die Stadt spätestens seit den 1970er Jahren nicht mehr nur als Gegenstand betrachtet, sondern als ›Laboratorium zur Analyse gesellschaftlicher Praxis‹, in der vor allem die kreative Nutzung durch die sie Bewohnenden zentral ist.«

»Ich schlage also folgende Definition vor: Performatives Forschen ist darstellerisches Forschen. Es untersucht unterschiedliche realitätsstiftende Darstellungen und forscht dabei selbst darstellerisch, indem es die eigenen Forschungsprozesse in verschiedenen Formaten und Medien transparent macht. Mit dieser Haltung werden visuelle, auditive, physische oder taktile Darstellungsformen nicht mehr nur illustrativ zum Text in die Forschung integriert, sondern auch zum autonomen Ausdruck der Forschung. Das in unserer Kultur gültige Privileg des Denkens in Sprache und Schrift als Ausdruck von Erkenntnis erweitert sich zu einem darstellenden Forschen, das plurimedial Prozesse transparent macht, anstatt fixiertes allgemeingültiges, rein sprachlich-akademisches Wissen abzugeben.«

»This performative approach is especially well suited for issues surrounding the city because cities are structures that are too profoundly complex and dynamic to be sized up adequately in the statistical, rationalised categories found in blueprints, maps, diagrams, and statistics. In urban sociology, since no later than the nineteen-seventies, the city has gone from being merely an observed object to becoming a ›laboratory for the analysis of social practice‹ in which, more than anything else, the creative use of the city by its residents has become the central aspect.«

»I thus propose the following definition: performative research is presentational research. It analyses various presentations that create reality, and conducts research in a presentational way by making its own research processes transparent in various formats and media. In this view, visual, auditory, physical, and tactile forms of a presentation are no longer merely integrated into research as illustrations of the text, but also become an autonomous component of the research. The privilege our culture places on thinking in language and writing as an expression of knowledge would thereby broaden into presentational research that makes processes transparent through several media, instead of delivering fixed, warmed-over, and purely linguistic-academic knowledge.«
